!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome! This is an unmoderated list for parents who had a baby in or
around September 1996. It is a fairly high volume list with over 100
messages on some days. For this reason it is also available as a digest.
The digest version will collect lots of messages together and post them
together with an index. This happens whenever the digest reaches 50k or
50 messages, but at least every 12 hours even when traffic is light.

I have a web site for the list members where you can put picture of
yourself (password protected for members only) and an unprotected page for
getting your baby photos published. Let the contact person listed below know
and we'll take care of it. We can scan pictures for you (happily and hastily
returned in your SASE), and retrieve them off the net. Or send an email
attachment to the appropriate contact person. The URL for the web site is:

http://www.holodeck.com/september-list/momhome.html

Contact me personally at stevens @ holodeck.com for the password to protected
areas of the web site.

| Important Notes |
+++++++++++++++++++
You may be automatically unsubscribed from the list or digest if your
email starts bouncing. If you find this happening to you (you will stop
receiving september-list messages), just resubscribe to the list when your
account comes back up and things will go back to normal. Sometimes the list
is quiet for a day or so, but that hasn't happened for a while :->. The
server is pretty nice about this and doesn't bounce you from the list until
you bounce messages for several days in a row.

If you use an older vacation program when you leave town, please
unsubscribe from the list before you do so. This prevents your vacation
messages from being sent to all of the list members. I always have a
several back issues of the digest that I would be more than happy to send
you when you get back.

It is generally appreciated if you would edit down quotations of
previously posted messages. Just include enough of the previous posting to
establish the context you need to make your point.

Extended one-to-one correspondence that is not relevant to any other list
members should be carried out via email instead of the list.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
| General List Instructions |
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The September List does not run on either the listserv or majordomo systems
so things may be a little different from other lists.

All list messages and commands should be sent to the machine lists.best.com

(I) Synopsis of September List aliases

september-list - post to the list
september-list-response - authentication responses sent here
     september-list-request - send subscribe/unsubscribe/info/alias
september-list-errors - (error return for bounces, invisible)
september-list-owner - send mail to the moderator of the list

(II) Getting The List Server Help File (similar to what you are reading now)

email a message to the request address of the list

     september-list-request@lists.best.com

The body of the message should contain a single line, left justified,
containing the keyword 'help' in lower case.

The list server will respond with the general help file.

(III) Authentication

Many of the requests you make to the list server requires
authentication. The list server authenticates a request by emailing a
message back to you with a special Subject: line. The message contains
complete iunstructions. You normally Reply to the message (such that the
original Subject is still in the Subject: header, possibly with an Re:
in front of it). You must edit the REJECT clause in the Subject line to
say ACCEPT if you want to go ahead and run your original command.

You must be sure to leave the ID clause intact or the list manager will
not be able to authenticate your request.

The purpose of authentication is to ensure that a valid return email
address exists and to disuade spammers from crashing the list. The
moderator has the ability to turn on authentication AND moderation for
any request, so you may not get an immediate response.

(IV) Subscribing

To subscribe to a list you normally send email to the -request address
of the list, as in 'september-list-request@lists.best.com'. The body
of the message should contain the keyword 'subscribe' alone or, if you
want to subscribe a third party address, the subscribe keyword may be
     followed by an email address.

     subscribe

     or

     subscribe email-address

By default, you will be subscribed to the digest version of the list.
To subscribe to the single-message-per-mail version, use the
'subsingle' command instead of the 'subscribe' command.

(V) Third Party Subscribes

A Third Party Subscribe occurs when person A subscribes person B rather
then just himself. This is only allowed for you to subscribe yourself
from an address other than the one you wish to receive the list at. Do
not subscribe another person! Send that person the instructions to
subscribe or have them contact september-list-owner@lists.best.com for
assistance. Person B will be sent an email asking him or her to
acknowledge the subscription before that person is actually added to
     the list.

If you receive a third party verification request and you do not want
to be on the list, simply ignore the mail.

(VI) Posting from multiple email addresses

By default, this list only allows subscribed addresses to post. You can
add your other addresses to the list with the 'alias' command.

     alias email-address

This allows you to post to the list from another email-address without
the list distribution being sent to that address. You can add as many
aliases as you like. If you think you need this but aren't sure, contact
     september-list-owner@lists.best.com for assistance.

(VII) Unsubscribing

To unsubscribe from a list, send the 'unsubscribe' command. You can
also unsubscribe third parties by adding an email address.

     unsubscribe

     or

     unsubscribe email-address

Note that if you have several list aliases, you should unsubscribe from
those aliases as well as the one you are receiving the list on. Or at
     least let me know.

(VIII) List Information

You can request list-specific information (this file) with the 'info'
     command.
